What this meta description checker checks and how to act on it

A meta description checker fetches a page and reports the description's length against the roughly 155 to 160 character desktop display limit and the shorter mobile limit, whether it is missing or duplicated, whether it repeats the title, and whether it reads as a specific summary or generic copy that Google is likely to replace with a passage from the page.

Google uses the meta description when it accurately describes the page and matches the query better than page content does; otherwise it substitutes a passage. Descriptions that are specific, unique to the page, and mirror the page's opening paragraph are used far more often. Descriptions are not a ranking factor; they affect click-through rate, so measure changes by CTR at a stable position.

How to use the meta description checker

  1. Enter a public page URL.
  2. The checker reads the meta description and measures it in characters and approximate pixels.
  3. Review the findings: missing, short, a copy of the title, a generic opener, or a weak match to the page content.
  4. Rewrite it as a specific summary of the page and check the length again.

What it does not check

  • Which snippet Google will show; Google may use a passage from the page instead.
  • Click-through rate; measure that in Search Console after a change.
