What this sitemap checker checks and how to act on it
A sitemap checker fetches an XML sitemap or sitemap index, confirms it returns 200 with valid XML in the sitemaps.org namespace, checks the 50,000 URL and 50 MB limits, and validates URL form. Format checks catch parse errors; they do not catch listed URLs that redirect, return 404, carry a canonical to another page, or are noindexed, which need a crawl of the listed URLs.
Only live, canonical, indexable URLs belong in a sitemap. Set lastmod only when content actually changed, because Google ignores lastmod on sites where the values are obviously untrue, and omit changefreq and priority, which Google ignores. After submitting, compare Search Console's discovered count with the Pages report to see how many listed URLs are actually indexed and why the rest are not.
