Definition
A citation gap is the condition in which, for a given prompt submitted to an AI answer engine, the engine's response cites at least one page from a competing domain and no page from your domain. Citation gaps are enumerated by running a fixed set of prompts across engines and recording the cited sources. The set of gaps, grouped by the page types that earned citations, is the output of a citation gap analysis.
How it differs from a keyword gap
A keyword gap is a query for which a competitor ranks and you do not, measured in search results. A citation gap is a prompt for which a competitor is cited in a synthesised answer and you are not. They overlap but are not the same: a site can rank on page one for a query and be absent from the AI Overview above it, and a site with modest rankings can be cited if it has the clearest page for a prompt. Citation gaps are also engine-specific, because ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google cite differently.

Why citation gaps occur
Most often because no page on your site answers the prompt in the shape the engine wants: a direct answer up front, a table, an FAQ, on a page whose full content is in the HTML. Sometimes because AI crawlers are blocked by robots.txt or a CDN rule, so the engine cannot fetch your page at all. Occasionally because a competitor's page is simply better cited across the web. Authority is the least common cause in software categories, where self-published comparison and best-of pages on small domains are cited routinely.
A worked example
In September 2026, SerionFlow ran six buying-intent prompts about programmatic SEO tools through ChatGPT with web search. It was cited zero times.
